The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York City recently added two drawings by Shuvinai Ashoona to their permanent collection.
Neither of the drawings, Full Moon (2008) or My Drawings (2006/07) are currently on display, but they have been added to the online gallery.
They join a relatively small collection of prints and drawings by Inuit artists, including work by Parr, Iyola Kingwatsiak, Pauta Saila, Pudlo Pudlat, Pitseolak Ashoona, and more. (“And more” includes things like Niviaksiak’s 1959 Polar Bear and Cub in Ice.) They also have several videos by Zacharias Kunuk. (It doesn’t appear they have any sculpture in the collection.) None of the Inuit pieces are currently on exhibit, although most can be viewed online from the above link.
