“North of North” brings life in the Arctic to homes in the south

The new comedy series North of North brings life in the Arctic to those of us in the south through the misadventures of Siaja, a young Inuk mother who dreams of reinventing herself after a spontaneous, very public exit from her marriage. And the series promises that will be a challenge in Siaja’s small Arctic town where everybody knows your business.

Filmed in Iqaluit, Siaja is played by local actress Anna Lambe (old bio). Other parts are also played by actors from Nunavut. Inuit filmakers Alethea Arnaquq-Baril and Stacey Aglok MacDonald are behind the series, which was produced by CBC, Netflix and APTN. Six of eight episodes have already been released in Canada.

If you are in the USA, you’ll have to check around a bit to see where you can actually stream this, as it appears it is available on several services — but only for streaming in Canada. One one work-around is to use a VPN or proxy service to set your location to Canada. Here are directions for doing that using one of the better-known VPNs. Otherwise, just wait a bit. It’s scheduled to be available internationally sometime this spring.
