Informal IAS members-only gathering in Winnipeg in August

IAS members are invited to an informal gathering in Winnipeg on August 18 and 19, 2026.

This event was arranged as a way of satisfying our wish to get together to share our love of Inuit art and culture, while keeping the planning and activities simple and the expenses down.

On the 18th and 19th we will join Darlene Coward Wight, scholar and curator of Inuit art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq, for private tours of Abraham Anghik Ruben’s extraordinary exhibition, which features over 100 sculptures and paintings produced between 1975 and 2025. Additionally, we will be viewing Ningiukulu Teevee’s newly opened show, “Stories from the Arctic.” Darlene has also promised to take us into the vault and storage areas in the museum!

Images from the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq, including views of the Visible Vault, pieces in storage, and pieces included in the Abraham Anghik Ruben and Ningiukulu Teevee exhibitions.

In addition to these two spectacular exhibits at the WAG, the Nunavut Gallery in Winnipeg will be featuring two exhibits when we are in town. One features works by Ning Teevee and the other features prints and drawings by Tim Pitsiulak. All artworks are for sale. If you are interested in purchasing one of the available 90 works by Ning Teevee, you can check the Nunavut Gallery Facebook page or Instagram or contact the gallery at 204-478-7233 or 204-470-9213 for images and information. The sale begins on May 2 and continues through the summer.

Multiple prints by Ning Teevee.

What we are organizing

We (Leslie Saxon West, Christopher Bredt, and Cindy Carlsson – with assistance from Darlene Coward Wight) are organizing tours at the WAG-Qaumajuq on August 18 and 19. We will also organize visits to the Nunavut Gallery.

We are not arranging any meals, but we’ll be happy to have you join us wherever we end up eating.

What you will need to do on your own

You will need to arrange your travel to Winnipeg and transport and accommodations in Winnipeg.

From Fargo, the drive to Winnipeg is under 4 hours. It’s about 8 hours from Minneapolis. And Winnipeg has an international airport.

The following hotels are within easy walking distance of the WAG:

Hampton Inn by Hilton Winnipeg Downtown

Alt Hotel

Delta Hotel

Fort Garry Hotel (A historic railroad hotel)

We encourage you to book lodging as early as possible, as Winnipeg is a popular summer vacation destination in this part of Canada and hotels will get busy.

There is a lot to see in Winnipeg. If you wish to extend your visit to see other things, recommendations include:

If you’d like to know more about the WAG-Qaumajuq, planning a trip to Winnipeg, or other things to do in Winnipeg, you can check this post the WAG-Qaumajuq on my (Cindy’s) website.
