It’s already been a long, hot summer for a lot of folks. If that has you thinking about a vacation somewhere cool, you might want to consider visiting the Arctic this fall with our friend Dr. Darlene Coward Wight, Curator of Inuit Art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq.

Darlene worked with Indigena Travel to organize an exclusive Inuit Art & Arctic Communities Exploration tour that will visit three Inuit communities and other sites on south Baffin Island. The tour is limited to 12 travelers and includes visits with artists in Pangnirtung, Kinngait, and Iqaluit.
“. . . immerse yourself in the rich cultural tapestry and breathtaking landscapes of Nunavut. Begin in Iqaluit, where the vibrant Inuit heritage comes alive. Venture to Pangnirtung to witness the majestic beauty of Auyuittuq National Park and engage with local artisans at the Uqqurmiut Centre. Continue to Kinngait, renowned for its world-class printmaking studios and the inspiring Kenojuak Cultural Centre. Throughout this trip, experience authentic community interactions, guided excursions, and the unparalleled artistry of the Inuit people. Join us for this carefully curated adventure that promises deep connections and lasting memories.” (Inuit Art & Arctic Communities brochure)
Sadly, the timing of this tour is really tight for those planning to attend the IAS meeting in Indianapolis, as this tour begins September 2 and ends in Ottawa on September 10. But, if you can make it work, it looks like a great tour.
For those of you who don’t know Darlene, she’s been the Curator of Inuit Art at the WAG-Qaumajuq since 1986. From 1981–1985 she worked for Canadian Arctic Producers, traveling to many communities to provide artistic and marketing advice to artists and Inuit-owned co-operatives. Darlene has curated 97 exhibitions. She’s also researched and written 27 exhibition catalogues, as well as many smaller publications and articles.
