Abraham Anghik Ruben at Qaumajuq in Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is featuring a massive solo show of Abraham Anghik Ruben’s work in the Qaumajuq Inuit art center. The exhibit opens with a public celebration on May 23rd and will run until spring 2026. It’s the first solo show in Qaumajuq’s enormous main gallery and includes paintings as well as the carvings Anghik Ruben is so well known for.

“This exhibition features over 100 artworks including sculptures and paintings produced from 1975 to 2025, and brings into focus important milestones in Anghik Ruben’s life. This personal perspective is different from his past shows around the globe, and shares what was happening in the artist’s world when he was making his extraordinary pieces. Additionally, this show explores Inuit myth and legends, as well as Nordic peoples and history in particular Inuit and Viking contact.”

I got a teeny tiny preview of the Abraham Anghik Ruben exhibit when I visited Qaumajuq (and got to go down into the storage area!) earlier this year.

Anghik Ruben’s first solo museum show was at the WAG 25 years ago. This looks like an amazing follow-up.
