Two IAS Board Members Take a Trip of a Lifetime to the Arctic
IAS Board Members Janet Beylin and Ann Conway took the trip of a lifetime this past September when they visited Inuit villages in Greenland and Baffin Island.
Traveling with a top-notch resource team (e.g., culturist, biologist, artist, etc.), Janet and Ann traveled with about 120 others for ten days on a small cruise ship for a “Heart of the Arctic” tour that was put together by the Dennos Museum Center and Adventure Canada Tours.
Read Ann’s fascinating and candid journal of what it was like to travel above the Arctic Circle, meet some of the artists whose art works grace her home, take a “dip” with Janet in the freezing waters of the Arctic, and most importantly experience the Inuit people, their culture and their environment first-hand. It is the next best thing to being there!!
And speaking of the Arctic, read an excellent, but unsettling article by Ben Webster entitled The Arctic Will Be Ice-Free in Summer within 20 Years, Research Says. Ships will be able to sail in open water to the North Pole in the summer of 2020, according to a study that found a rapid acceleration in the loss of sea ice. The impact on those Inuit living above the Arctic Circle will be undoubtedly affected, and probably not for the better.
